"Donetsk Residents Struggle With Daily Life Amid Ukraine Conflict"
by Kristina Jovanovski
Summary
In Ukraine, there has been fighting raging on between the Ukraine government army and the Pro-Russian rebels who want to form their own separate country, and the conflict has killed over 4,300 people. The article talks about three different women who are trying to keep living while the war rages on. Even though two out of the three women can hear explosions in the night, enough to move the beds that they sleep in every night. But even with the fighting during the night, people still manage to walk their dogs during the day, people walk home from work, and workers repair damaged power lines.
Two women mentioned in the article, Alina and Tamara, where both teachers, Alina teaching music and Tamara teaching kindergarten, had not been paid in months. They both live on food donations that are given out by a former circus at a local meeting place that has been visited by more than 1,000 people in one day. And with the war still happening, the number of attendants is expected to rise.
While all of this happens the two sides have signed a seemingly non-existent cease-fire in September. The Ukrainian government has also stopped funding for schools and hospitals in rebel-held areas.
