"Donetsk Residents Struggle With Daily Life Amid Ukraine Conflict"
by Kristina Jovanovski
Analysis
There are three quotes that represent the theme of the glory and horror of war.
The first quote is, "Tamara added she had the equivalent of $12 in savings and like other elderly residents did not receive a pension" (Jovanovski 10). This shows that the Ukrainian government can not give their elderly a pension during this time of war, unlike the Social Security system that we have in the U.S.. This means that if they were to get hurt from the fighting of the rebels and government soldiers then they couldn't pay to get treatment at a hospital. The government does not have the money to give to the elderly, because it is all tied up in the war effort.
The second quote is, "Not everyone has stayed" (Jovanovski 18). This shows that many people of the Ukraine's population hasn't even stayed in the country through the war. Many people do not want to stay and sit out a war. This is how many Americans ancestor's have come to America. Their ancestors come from different countries that are in the middle of a war, but the difference is, the United States hasn't fought a single war on American turf, except for the Civil and Revolutionary War.
The third and final quote is, "This month the government ordered state services to rebel-held areas to be stopped, meaning hospitals and schools will not get funding" (Jovanovski 13). This quote shows that the government doesn't even have enough money to keep schools and even hospitals running.
